FAQ

Bollington Driving School FAQ – There are a lot of frequently asked questions related to driving instruction, as well as my services. I’ve provided the answer to these questions here to help put your mind at rest.

Q: How many lessons will I need?

A: The national pass rate is 42.5%. This is low because so many people put in for their test too early. I will advise you when you are completely ready, so that you can book a test in advance & work up to that day. Remember also that:

1) Everybody learns things at different speeds and learning to drive is no different. Some people will learn faster than others.

2) The amount of private practice you have in between each driving lessons with me is also a key ingredient.

3) It stands to reason that the more practice you have, the faster you will be ready to take your test.

Q: How many hours of lessons do you advise?

A: I offer 1 hour, and 1 hour 30 min lessons, and would recommend an average of 1-2 lessons a week but this obviously depends upon your own personal circumstances with work/other commitments and financing lessons.

Q: Will you offer me a mock test?

A: Yes. I always give a mock test at an appropriate time prior to your official practical driving test as this gives you a firm indication of exactly what it feels like to be in a ‘test’ situation and helps to highlight any areas which may need a little more attention.

Q: Will I have to share lessons?

A: No, there will never be another pupil in the car. Lessons are always taught on a ONE to ONE basis.

Q: Will I always be collected and dropped off in the same place?

A: With prior arrangement, I may be able to collect and/or drop you off from a different address than usual, provided it is within a reasonable driving time and distance of your normal collection point.

Q: What happens if I am very nervous?

A: 99% of pupils are nervous when they first start to drive. I am very patient and will encourage you, building your confidence and as you progress you will become a safe and confident driver. I also provide nervous pupil specialist support during all my lessons.

Unusually, I also provide a secondary service of clinical Hypnotherapy for those pupils who are extremely nervous. This is not a commonly available service of most driving instructors, but I felt it might help some of my pupils.

If you’d like to learn more about what this entails, please don’t hesitate to contact me so I can answer any questions you have, or view the website by clicking here.

Q: Do you offer Refresher Courses?

A: Yes. I offer Refresher Courses and will tailor these to the individual covering the areas where confidence is lacking.

Q: I hold an International Driving Licence. Is it valid in the UK and if not what do I need to do to get a UK Driving Licence?

A: Have a look on the DVLA website which will have all the information you need. If you are still not sure, ring me & I will be able to advise you.

Q: Do I book my own theory & practical tests?

A: You can book your own tests online but you will need my ADI number for this (please ask me for it when the time comes).

You will need a 2-hour driving lesson slot with Gary to allow for a 1-hour lesson before your test plus an hour to cover the test itself).

PLEASE DO NOT BOOK YOUR PRACTICAL TEST WITHOUT CHECKING MY AVAILABILITY FIRST – I may not have availability at the time/dates offered by DVLA.

Q: Which driving centre should I use for my driving test?

A: The driving test centres I cover from my base in Bollington are Macclesfield, Cheadle Hulme and Bredbury. Please do not book your practical test at any other test centres without checking with me first – extra costs may be incurred.

Q: Do you have lessons specifically for motorway driving?

A: Yes, but you need to have passed your driving test first.

Q: I need to take an extended test, can you help?

A: Yes, the extended test is longer than a normal driving test, & the standard required to pass is higher. You can discuss this with me at any time.

Q: I have seen cheaper lessons with other driving schools, how do you justify your charges?

A: You may be able to find some lessons cheaper, but I guarantee you ONE TO ONE FIRST CLASS DRIVING INSTRUCTION. In addition to this I will help you with your Theory Test.

Q: What is Pass Plus?

A: Pass Plus is a scheme designed by the Driving Standards Agency with the help of the Motor Insurance and Driving Instruction industries. The scheme helps new drivers gain valuable experience to help develop existing skills and learn new skills and techniques, improve anticipation and awareness, learn how to reduce the risk of accidents and maintain a courteous and considerate attitude on the road.

Once you have passed your test you are safe to drive on the road unaccompanied, but it is important to remember that you are actually a new and inexperienced driver.

Statistics show that new drivers are around 10 times more likely to be involved in an accident, and regrettably, 2% of drivers under the age of 25 have fatal accidents driving in the UK. Approximately 25% of new drivers will be involved in an accident in the first year of driving and that is the reason insurance premiums are so high!

Pass Plus Tuition Covers:

  • Town driving
  • Country roads
  • Motorways
  • Dual Carriageways
  • Night driving
  • Bad weather driving

You can view my pricing for Pass Plus on my Prices page.

Q: What are the benefits of Pass Plus?

A: The Pass Plus tuition course is a minimum of 6 hours (one hour per module) of intensive training. There is no test at the end of the course, you will be assessed by your instructor. When you have reached the required standard you will be awarded a certificate from the driving standards agency which may entitle you to a discount of up to 35% with some motor insurance companies.

Pass Plus Results

As an indication of the effectiveness of the scheme a recent survey carried out by the Driving Standards Agency showed that 93% of people who had taken Pass Plus felt more confident on the road, and 80% considered that their driving skills had improved as a result of taking the course.
